Weekend lie-ins did not undo a week of short nights in two laboratory studies

In-lab trials that restricted sleep on weekdays and allowed recovery at the weekend found insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance still worsened. Population surveys point the other way, and the designs explain why.

The two laboratory experiments that have tested the idea directly both found the same thing: letting people sleep as long as they wanted at the weekend did not prevent the metabolic damage caused by short weekday nights [s1] [s2]. In one, insulin sensitivity fell by roughly 9% to 27% in the group that got weekend recovery sleep and then went back to short nights [s1]. In the other, glucose tolerance fell despite an intervening weekend of recovery [s2].

That is a narrower claim than "you cannot catch up on sleep", and it is worth keeping it narrow, because the population data point the other way and the disagreement is instructive rather than embarrassing.

The first experiment

Researchers randomised healthy young adults to one of three conditions across nine nights: a control group with 9-hour sleep opportunities (n = 8); a sleep restriction group with 5-hour sleep opportunities and no weekend recovery (n = 14); and a weekend recovery group who had insufficient sleep for a five-day workweek, then two days of ad libitum weekend recovery, then two more nights of insufficient sleep (n = 14) [s1].

Both restricted groups increased their after-dinner energy intake and gained weight relative to baseline during insufficient sleep [s1]. During the ad libitum weekend, participants cumulatively slept about 1.1 hours more than at baseline, and after-dinner energy intake fell relative to the restricted week — so the weekend did something [s1].

Then the workweek pattern resumed, and the gains reversed. During the recurrent insufficient sleep following the weekend, circadian phase was delayed, and after-dinner energy intake and body weight increased relative to baseline [s1]. In the restriction group, whole-body insulin sensitivity decreased by about 13% during insufficient sleep versus baseline; in the weekend recovery group, whole-body, hepatic and muscle insulin sensitivity decreased by about 9% to 27% during the recurrent insufficient sleep [s1].

One further detail, rarely quoted and worth noting because it complicates any single summary: during the weekend, total sleep duration was lower in women than in men, and energy intake returned to baseline levels in women but not in men [s1].

The second experiment, and what it added

A 16-day in-laboratory study published in SLEEP in late 2025 ran a closer simulation of two consecutive working weeks in 48 healthy young adults [s2]. After two baseline nights of 8 hours time-in-bed, participants went through two cycles of a "weekday" manipulation followed by a "weekend" of 8-hour recovery nights for everyone [s2]. The weekday conditions were 8 hours per night for the control group, a stable 6 hours per night for one short-sleep group, and a variable schedule of 8, 4, 8, 4 and 6 hours for the other [s2].

Glucose and insulin were measured while fasting and during oral glucose tolerance tests at the end of baseline and each manipulation period [s2]. The headline result is that glucose homeostasis was impaired after recurrent periods of sleep restriction, and the authors state plainly that weekday sleep restriction led to decreased glucose tolerance despite intervening weekend recovery sleep [s2].

The study's more original finding is that how the sleep loss was distributed mattered. The stable short-sleep group showed early signs of insulin resistance, with compensatory insulin hypersecretion and a small elevation in glucose concentrations [s2]. The variable short-sleep group showed what the authors describe as possible beta cell functional impairment: no significant compensatory insulin hypersecretion, and prominent increases in glucose [s2]. Two routes to the same bad endpoint, depending on whether the short nights were uniform or erratic.

The authors' own conclusion is unusually direct for a sleep paper: having a time-in-bed within the age-specific recommended range every night appeared to be the only way to optimize glucose tolerance [s2].

Why the population data disagree

Cross-sectional survey work often finds the opposite pattern. An analysis of 3,400 adults aged 20 and over in the 2017–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that participants with cardiovascular disease had shorter weekend catch-up sleep than those without [s3]. Among people sleeping under 6 hours on weekdays, catch-up sleep of more than 2 hours was associated with a reduced prevalence of cardiovascular disease [s3].

That study defined weekend catch-up sleep as sleeping one hour longer on weekends than on weekdays, and it is cross-sectional — sleep and disease were measured at the same moment [s3]. It cannot establish direction. People with cardiovascular disease may sleep differently because they are ill; people who are able to sleep in on Saturday may differ from those who cannot in employment, caring responsibilities and health to begin with.

What the two literatures are each good for

The laboratory studies establish causation within a narrow frame: randomise people to short weekday nights with or without weekend recovery, measure metabolism directly, and the recovery does not restore it [s1] [s2]. They are small — eight, 14 and 14 participants across the three arms of one, and 48 in the other — young, healthy, and run over days rather than years [s1] [s2]. They say nothing about whether the effects persist, and neither measured a hard clinical outcome.

The survey establishes an association in a nationally representative sample and cannot establish direction [s3].

Held together, the honest reading is that weekend recovery sleep does something — after-dinner eating fell during the recovery weekend in the first trial [s1] — but that the metabolic markers which had shifted during the short-sleep week had not returned to baseline once the pattern resumed [s1] [s2]. Sleeping in on Saturday is not a null activity. On the evidence available, it is also not a substitute for the nights it is meant to repay.
