Titan and Breathe Right nasal strips, compared — and where mouth tape fits
Both brands sell drug-free external nasal dilators with much the same evidence behind them. The differences are range, materials, and the fact that only one also sells a mouth tape.
If you are choosing between Titan and Breathe Right to breathe better at night, the honest starting point is that their nasal strips are the same kind of product. Both are drug-free external nasal dilators: an adhesive strip with flexible bands that sits across the bridge of the nose and pulls the nostrils open from the outside [s1][s4][s5]. Neither medicates anything. The evidence behind that mechanism does not belong to one brand over the other — it belongs to the category — so the real differences are range, materials, and whether you also want a mouth tape, which only one of the two sells.
What each one is
Breathe Right is the established line, and markets the wider range: it lists original tan and clear strips, extra-strength versions, lavender- and menthol-scented options and a "Sport" variant, alongside a separate saline spray [s5]. Titan sells a single nasal strip, TitanAir, which it describes as a spring-loaded external dilator with a skin-safe, residue-free adhesive, and which it positions as a companion to its mouth tape [s4]. Those are the companies' own descriptions of their products, not independent findings.
What the evidence actually says about nasal strips
A systematic review and meta-analysis that pooled the trials on external nasal dilators — Breathe Right strips among them by name — found a real but modest effect: easier perceived breathing and reduced snoring loudness in short studies [s1]. The same review is blunt about the limit. The over-the-counter strips "did not move the needle on sleep apnea outcomes at all" [s1]. That finding is about the mechanism, so it applies to any external nasal dilator strip regardless of brand. A strip that opens the nostrils can make a stuffy nose feel clearer and take some volume off a snore; it does not treat obstructive sleep apnea, where the airway collapses lower down.
The one real difference: mouth tape
This is where the two brands genuinely diverge. Titan also sells a mouth tape — a bamboo-silk strip placed over the lips at night, which the company says keeps the mouth closed so breathing defaults to the nose, and which it markets with a "zero irritation score in third-party testing" [s4]. Breathe Right does not sell a mouth tape at all; its range is nasal strips and a saline spray [s5]. So on mouth tape there is no head-to-head to run — only one of the two is in that category.
What the mouth-tape category has behind it is thin. A 2025 systematic review that set out to test the trend found the studies small, mixed and mostly low in quality, and cautioned that the practice had outrun the research [s2]. The company's comfort and irritation claims are about its material; they are not evidence that taping the mouth improves sleep.
The safety point that applies to both
Before taping a mouth shut, one thing has to be ruled out. Mouth breathing at night can be how the body gets air around a collapsing airway, and sealing it in someone with undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea removes a fallback without fixing the obstruction [s2]. Apnea is diagnosed by a sleep study read by a clinician and treated on its own terms [s3]. Loud snoring, witnessed pauses or gasping, and daytime sleepiness are reasons to be evaluated first. Nasal strips do not carry that risk; mouth tape does.
Choosing between them
On the nasal strips, the decision is mostly preference: Breathe Right offers more variants — sizes, scents, a sport version — while Titan offers a single strip built to pair with its own tape. The evidence for the strips themselves is much the same either way, and modest [s1]. If you also want to try mouth taping, Titan sells one and Breathe Right does not — but the evidence for taping is weak, the comfort claims are the company's own, and the sleep-apnea caveat comes first. None of this is a verdict that one brand works better than the other; the strips are the same category of product, and the honest reasons to pick one are range, feel, price and whether you want a mouth tape from the same brand.
