Calorie-tracking apps help you lose a couple of kilograms — if you keep logging
Pooled across 23 trials, weight-loss apps beat a waitlist by about 2 kg at six months. Which features the app had made no measurable difference; adherence, which falls over time, is the real variable.
Smartphone apps that track eating do produce weight loss, but a modest amount — around two kilograms more than doing nothing over six months — and the evidence suggests the specific features matter far less than whether a person keeps using the app [s1][s2]. That is the useful, deflationary answer to a market that sells calorie logging as a solution: a real tool, a small effect, and a familiar failure mode in adherence.
What the trials pool to
A 2026 meta-analysis gathered 23 randomised controlled trials of weight-loss apps that target eating behaviour in adults [s1]. App-based interventions produced more weight loss than waitlist controls — a mean difference of 2.07 kg — and more than non-app interventions, by a mean difference of 1.64 kg, both at six months [s1]. Across the app studies, weight-loss estimates ranged from 0.63 to 3.87 kg at six months, and mean weight loss at longer follow-ups was 2.64 kg [s1].
Two kilograms is a genuine but small effect — enough to matter at a population level and as an adjunct, not enough to reshape a person's health on its own. The more surprising result is what did not predict success. The analysis found no moderating effect of the features usually marketed as the active ingredients: calorie counting, social support, involvement of medical workers, or automatic feedback reports made no measurable difference to the amount of weight lost [s1]. The authors suggest apps could be cost-effective tools to facilitate weight loss and to help maintain it after surgery or drug treatment, while noting that more evidence on long-term effectiveness is needed [s1].
What the apps actually are
A companion scoping review mapped the calorie-counting category itself, synthesising 68 studies — a third of them randomised trials — of apps used by adults with overweight or weight-related conditions [s2]. It identified 46 distinct calorie-counting apps, with MyFitnessPal and Lose It! the most frequently studied [s2]. Nearly all of them (45 of 46) offered calorie logging, usually through manual entry backed by a food database, and about half included goal-setting [s2].
The review's account of what helps and what hinders is where the practical signal is. The most cited factors behind acceptability were personalisation, automation, a user-friendly design, and the ability to share data with a health professional [s2]. The barriers were technical problems, limited food databases, and the burden of manual entry — and, tellingly, adherence declined over time [s2]. Manual food logging is effortful, and effort is the enemy of the daily habit these apps depend on.
Adherence is the whole game
Put the two findings together and the picture is coherent. The trials show the effect does not hinge on which bells and whistles an app has [s1]; the scoping review shows the thing that varies, and fades, is whether people keep logging [s2]. That reframes the choice for a would-be user away from feature comparison and toward sustainability: the best calorie app is the one a person will actually still be using in three months.
It is the same lesson that recurs across consumer health tech. Step-tracking tools add about a thousand steps a day but the gains fade once the novelty passes; a fitness app that paid people to hit step goals held only a small average gain over two years. Behaviour-change maintenance, not the technology, is the binding constraint — and calorie apps carry the extra drag of manual data entry, which the review flags as a specific barrier [s2].
What it means for a reader
A calorie-tracking app is a reasonable, low-cost adjunct that can help with a couple of kilograms of weight loss over months, and there is no evidence that paying for a feature-rich version beats a simple one on results [s1]. Its value depends almost entirely on continued logging, which most people taper off, so the realistic expectation is a modest, adherence-limited effect — best used as one part of a plan rather than the plan itself [s1][s2].
