A wrist tracker found a step-count number tied to frailty before major surgery
In a small pilot of older veterans, those walking fewer than about 4,100 steps a day before an operation were more likely to be frail. Most weren't walking enough to recover afterward.
Wearable step trackers are usually discussed in terms of general fitness goals, but a pilot study published this month tests a more specific, clinical use: whether a patient's ordinary daily step count, tracked before surgery, can flag frailty in older adults heading into a major operation [s1].
What the study measured
Researchers at a Veterans Affairs hospital conducted a single-center observational pilot study of older adults (60 and older) undergoing elective inpatient operations [s1]. What happened a month after surgery

The finding that cuts across both groups
