Picky eating is usually a phase: most toddlers outgrow it within a few years

For most children, picky eating is a passing phase, not a lasting problem. A population study that tracked more than four thousand children found that nearly half were picky eaters at some point in early childhood, but roughly two-thirds of the early picky eaters outgrew it within three years, and the overall prevalence fell from about 27% in toddlerhood to 13.2% by age six [s1]. A small group — about 4% — stayed persistently picky, and it is mainly that group, or picky eating that affects a child's nutrition and growth, that turns the phase into a concern [s1].
What the trajectory study found
The clearest picture comes from a general-population cohort of 4,018 children whose mothers reported on their eating at ages 1.5, 3, and 6 years [s1]. Snapshot prevalence was high in the toddler years and then dropped: 26.5% at 1.5 years, 27.6% at 3 years, and 13.2% at 6 years [s1].
Following the same children over time, rather than taking snapshots, told the more useful story. The researchers identified four trajectories. The largest group — 55% of children — were never picky at any of the three assessments [s1]. At the other extreme, a persistent group who were picky at every age made up just 4% [s1]. Between those poles sat children who were picky at some point and then stopped: almost two-thirds of the early picky eaters had remitted within three years [s1]. Overall, the study found that nearly half (46%) of children were picky eaters at some point during early childhood, and that "remittance was very high" [s1].
The authors' conclusion is the reassuring headline, stated in their own terms: this pattern "suggests that picky eating is usually a transient behavior and part of normal development in preschool children" [s1]. Picky eating, in this large sample, was closer to a normal developmental stage than to a disorder.
Who stays picky
The same study is careful not to wave away the minority for whom it persists. It found that male sex, lower birth weight, non-Western maternal ethnicity, and low parental income predicted persistent picky eating [s1]. That a substantial subgroup remains persistently picky is the reason the phenomenon cannot be dismissed wholesale — the population-level reassurance and the individual-level exception are both real.
Why the numbers vary so much elsewhere
Anyone comparing prevalence figures across sources will find them wildly inconsistent, and a companion review explains why. It notes there is "no single widely accepted definition of picky eating," and consequently "little consensus on an appropriate assessment measure and a wide range of estimates of prevalence" [s2]. Picky eating — also called fussy, faddy, or choosy eating — is generally characterised by an unwillingness to eat familiar foods or to try new ones, together with strong food preferences, but studies operationalise that differently [s2].
The review's practical warning is about consequences, not labels: the main documented effect of picky eating is poorer dietary variety in early childhood, which raises questions about nutrient intake [s2]. That is the mechanism by which a normal phase can shade into a genuine concern — not the fussiness itself, but its effect on what a child actually eats over time. The review also calls for more health-related and longitudinal data, an admission that the long-term consequences remain under-studied [s2].
Phase or problem
The evidence supports a two-part answer to the question in the headline. As a population, picky eating is usually a phase: most children who go through it come out the other side within a few years, and prevalence falls markedly by school age [s1]. As an individual matter, it becomes a problem in the minority for whom it persists, or when it narrows a child's diet enough to affect nutrition or growth — the outcome the definitional review flags as the one that matters [s2].
What the studies do not provide is a threshold that separates normal fussiness from a feeding disorder in a given child; the definitions are too varied for that, and the cohort describes groups, not individuals [s1] [s2].
