Skinmaxxing: the 'glass skin' routine, and where stacking actives backfires

Two ingredients carry most of the real evidence. The rest of the multi-step routine adds cost and, when actives are layered too hard, a damaged skin barrier.

Skinmaxxing — sometimes "dermmaxxing" — is the pursuit of flawless, poreless "glass skin" through an ever-expanding routine: cleanser, exfoliating acids, vitamin C, niacinamide, a retinoid, peptides, multiple serums and, correctly, sunscreen, often applied in a fixed nightly order copied from a forum or a video. The premise is that more active ingredients, more consistently layered, produce better skin. The dermatology evidence points the other way on almost everything except two ingredients — and it identifies the routine's own maximalism as a route to harm.

The honest summary is that skincare has a short list of things that genuinely change skin and a long tail of products that mostly change a bank balance. The two items with the strongest evidence are the two the trend treats as merely part of a longer stack.

The two ingredients that carry the evidence

The first is a retinoid. A systematic review of randomised trials of topical tretinoin for photoaging screened 180 studies and found seven that met its criteria; within those, the direction of effect was consistent across concentrations from 0.025% to 5% and durations from three to 24 months, with improvement in fine wrinkling and pigmentation and every trial reporting the drug as safe and well tolerated [s1]. A 2025 review places tretinoin's role across acne, photoaging and even skin-cancer chemoprevention on the same durable footing [s4]. The second is sunscreen, and it is the one step that has an outcome trial behind it rather than a surrogate-marker one. Where stacking actives backfires

The trend's core assumption — that layering more actives compounds the benefit — is where it turns from wasteful to harmful. Retinoids and exfoliating acids both work partly by irritating and accelerating turnover of the skin, and the tretinoin literature is explicit that irritation is dose-dependent [s1][s4]. Piling a retinoid on top of glycolic or salicylic acid, a vitamin C at low pH, and a physical scrub — the maximal version of the routine — is a recipe for the "compromised barrier" that dermatologists increasingly see in young, heavy users: stinging, redness, peeling and a rebound of the very breakouts the routine was meant to fix. The American Academy of Dermatology's acne guideline is built on matching a small number of agents to the problem and introducing them carefully, not on maximal concurrent use [s3].

Over-exfoliation is the specific failure mode. There is no evidence that exfoliating harder or more often improves skin, and good mechanistic reason to expect the opposite once the barrier is stripped. "Glass skin" as marketed is largely lighting, youth and genetics; chasing it with a heavier active load past the point of irritation makes skin worse, not more optimised.

The parts with little behind them

Most of the remaining steps are cosmetically pleasant and evidentially thin. What to watch

Skinmaxxing is not dangerous the way some optimisation trends are, but its logic is inverted. The evidence rewards restraint — one retinoid, one sunscreen, introduced slowly — and penalises the maximalism the name celebrates. A routine that leaves skin stinging, red or breaking out is not under-optimised; it is over-treated, and the fix is subtraction. Persistent or severe acne, and any changing or suspicious mole, are reasons to see a clinician rather than to add another serum.
