Tennis is arguing about workload. Here is what the injury data shows
A players' association says arm injuries more than doubled this year. A 46-year analysis of tour matches finds a slower, steadier rise. Both can be true, and neither settles the calendar question.
The 2026 US Open main draw begins on 30 August and ends with the men's final on 13 September, closing a tournament the USTA is running across 22 days from the start of its qualifying and fan week on 23 August [s6]. It arrives three weeks after the Professional Tennis Players Association published injury figures that it used to argue the professional calendar is now doing measurable damage.
The PTPA's numbers, released on 10 August 2026 after a run of withdrawals from the Canadian Open, are these: upper-body injuries were up 42% in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, and arm injuries were up 112% this year against the 2025 average [s1]. The association says the figures come from an analysis of more than 30,000 professional matches across eight years [s1]. Its conclusion: "The evidence is clear: the season is too long, recovery time is shrinking, and injuries are occurring earlier and becoming more severe" [s1]. Four leading men and four leading women withdrew from the Canadian Open draws [s1]. The underlying research programme was launched roughly three years ago under the PTPA's medical director, Dr Robby Sikka [s1][s2].
Those are the association's own figures, published by an advocacy body in support of a position it already held. That does not make them wrong. It does mean the base rates matter.
What the independent epidemiology says
The largest peer-reviewed analysis of in-match retirements covers 167,211 ATP matches from 1973 to 2019 and 46,268 WTA matches from 1975 to 2019, published in the European Journal of Sport Science in September 2024 [s3]. It found an overall retirement incidence of 0.87 per 1,000 games on the ATP tour (95% CI 0.84–0.90) and 0.81 per 1,000 games on the WTA tour (95% CI 0.70–0.88) [s3].
Two findings from that dataset are relevant to the current argument. First, the direction of travel supports the players: the authors report "an increasing trend in the incidence of retirements in both ATP and WTA events, especially in recent years", with women's rates rising sharply after 2011 and men's stabilising around 2015 to 2017 [s3]. Second, surface matters more than the debate usually allows. Hard courts carried the highest retirement rate in both tours at 0.96 per 1,000 games, clay sat between at 0.92 (ATP) and 0.74 (WTA), and grass was lowest at 0.67 (ATP) and 0.52 (WTA) [s3].
The study's own stated limitation is the one that matters most here: it had no data on match duration in minutes [s3]. A retirement-per-game rate cannot distinguish a player who has spent four hours on court from one who has spent ninety minutes, and it cannot see the training, travel and practice load that sits between tournaments. Retirements are also a crude proxy for injury — they capture only the subset severe enough to stop a match in progress, missing everything managed, played through, or turned into a withdrawal before the first ball.
The calendar changes players are pointing at
The specific structural change under dispute is the 12-day tournament format now used by seven of the nine ATP Masters 1000 events [s7]. The PTPA has explicitly called for that expansion to be reconsidered, alongside reduced mandatory tournament commitments and a formal player role in shaping the schedule [s1]. The 2026 ATP season runs from 2 January to 22 November [s7]. A three-week gap was introduced between the end of Wimbledon and the start of the Canadian Open [s7].
The mechanism players describe is not more matches but fewer usable recovery days: a longer event window still requires being on site, training and preparing, so nominal rest days inside a draw are not equivalent to weeks off. That is a plausible physiological argument about chronic load, but it is an argument, not a measured finding. No published study has isolated the 12-day format as an exposure variable and tracked injury outcomes against it.
Heat is now a written rule
Separately, the ATP has for the first time codified a heat policy, effective from the 2026 season and applying to the four Grand Slams as well as tour events [s4]. It uses wet bulb globe temperature, an index combining air temperature, humidity, wind speed and solar radiation rather than air temperature alone [s5]. At a WBGT of 30.1°C or above, either player may request a 10-minute cooling break after the second set in a best-of-three match, and the break applies to both players; at 32.2°C, play is suspended [s4]. In best-of-five matches at the majors, the cooling break provision applies during the first two sets [s5]. During the break players may hydrate, change clothing, shower and receive coaching under supervision of ATP medical staff [s4].
The WTA has used WBGT measurements since 1992 [s4]. The immediate trigger for the men's tour adopting a comparable standard was the 2025 Shanghai Masters, held from 1 to 12 October, where seven players retired mid-match in extreme heat and humidity [s4].
This year's US Open is the first to be played under the new framework [s5].
What to watch
The PTPA has not, as of publication, released the underlying dataset or a peer-reviewed methodology for its 42% and 112% figures; the association's own page describes the work as pairing quantitative health data with players' accounts [s2]. Whether those percentages survive independent scrutiny — including questions of case definition, denominator, and whether a 112% rise reflects a genuine change or a small base — is the first thing to look for.
The second is whether either tour publishes injury surveillance data of its own. Tennis has no equivalent of the leaguewide injury reporting that some team sports produce annually, which is why an advocacy group's internal analysis and a 46-year retrospective on retirements are currently the two best available sources on the same question. Neither was designed to answer it.
