Bettors are messaging college athletes. There are now numbers on it
Two NCAA surveys nine weeks apart put the share of Division I men's basketball players receiving abuse tied to betting at 36% and 46%. The gap between them is the most informative part.
The college athlete-welfare question with the most new data behind it right now is not workload or concussion. It is what arrives on athletes' phones after a game.
On 5 February 2026 the NCAA published results from its Growth, Opportunities, Aspirations and Learning of Students in College survey — GOALS — drawing on responses from more than 20,000 student-athletes across all three divisions [s1]. Among Division I men's basketball players, 51% reported receiving social media abuse based on their athletic performance, and 46% reported receiving negative or threatening messages from someone who had bet on their game [s1]. NCAA President Charlie Baker said: "The level of social media harassment our student-athletes must endure is unacceptable" [s1].
Nine weeks earlier, on 18 November 2025, the association had released a different survey with a different number. The Student-Athlete Needs, Aspiration and Perspectives study — SNAP — surveyed nearly 6,800 students at 153 Division I schools between 30 September and 5 October, and found 36% of Division I men's basketball athletes reporting social media abuse related to sports betting in the past year [s2].
Why the two figures differ
The gap between 36% and 46% is not a contradiction; it is a lesson in how survey wording controls the answer. SNAP asked about betting-related social media abuse in the last year [s2]. GOALS asked about negative or threatening messages from someone who bet on the athlete's game [s1]. Different reference periods, different populations sampled, different phrasing of what counts. Neither instrument measures psychological harm — both measure self-reported exposure to a category of message.
That distinction matters for any claim about mental health consequences, because there is currently no published outcome data linking these exposures to clinical measures in this population. What exists is prevalence.
The SNAP survey also captured a form of contact that happens off-screen. Twenty-nine per cent of Division I men's basketball athletes reported interacting with a student on their own campus who had placed a bet on their team [s2]. Among Football Bowl Subdivision players, 16% reported receiving negative or threatening messages and 26% reported interacting with a student who had bet on their team [s2].
Across Division I men's sports as a whole the rates were far lower — 7% receiving negative or threatening messages from someone who bet on their game, 9% encountering a student who told them they had won or lost a bet on them [s2]. In women's sports, both figures were 1% [s2]. The burden is concentrated, heavily, in the two sports carrying the most betting volume.
What the message-level data adds
Self-report has obvious limits. A parallel study commissioned by the NCAA and conducted by Signify Group, an artificial intelligence firm that monitors online abuse, went at it from the content side, tracking seven championship events during the 2024-25 academic year across 5,555 athletes, 625 coaches, 466 teams and 26 official NCAA channels [s3].
Of nearly 4,000 messages flagged, betting and match-fixing abuse accounted for 11% — roughly twice the share of racial abuse or threats of violence [s3]. Sexual abuse made up 20% and sexism 14% [s3]. Overall flagged abuse fell 22% year over year, but men's basketball recorded a sharp increase while women's basketball recorded a significant decrease [s3]. The study identified 31 individuals responsible for egregious content, eight of them involved in sports betting, and seven messages were passed to law enforcement [s3]. Clint Hangebrauck, the NCAA's managing director of enterprise risk management, said the results suggested the association's "multi-layered strategy of building public awareness, advocacy and forming collaborative relationships with third parties is having a positive impact" [s3].
Two caveats travel with that dataset. It monitors a defined set of accounts and channels, so it cannot see direct messages that never surface publicly — which is precisely where the survey respondents say much of the betting abuse lands. And a 22% year-over-year fall in flagged messages could reflect less abuse, changed platform behaviour, or changed detection.
The regulatory response
On 15 January 2026 the NCAA formally asked state gambling commissions to eliminate individual player prop bets, ban high-risk prop markets such as first-half unders, impose stricter accountability on bettors who harass athletes, and give the association a formal role with regulators before certain bets are offered [s4]. Its stated justification cited the survey finding that 36% of Division I men's basketball players report harassment from someone with a betting interest [s4].
Four commissions — Louisiana, Maryland, Ohio and Vermont — had already banned individual college athlete prop bets, and two state legislatures were considering bills in 2026 [s4]. Baker said the association "has and will continue to aggressively pursue sports betting violations in college athletics using a layered integrity monitoring program" [s4].
The enforcement numbers give some sense of scale on the integrity side rather than the welfare side: NCAA enforcement staff opened investigations into roughly 40 student-athletes across 20 schools over the preceding year, with 11 already found to have violated betting rules [s4]. The SNAP release recorded approximately 30 current or former men's basketball athletes under investigation and 12 permanently banned from NCAA competition [s2].
The rest of the welfare picture
The February GOALS release also carried findings that cut the other way. Weekday sleep among student-athletes averaged 6 hours 48 minutes in 2025, an improvement of 33 minutes on the 6 hours 15 minutes recorded in 2019 [s1]. Football players slept least at 6 hours 24 minutes, though that was itself up from 5 hours 51 minutes in 2019 [s1]. Ice hockey players slept most — 7 hours 16 minutes for men and 7 hours 1 minute for women [s1].
Transfer motivations differed sharply by gender. Among men, 41% cited a desire to compete at a higher level and 29% wanted more playing time; among women, 47% needed a change from a previous coach or teammates and 39% said they were aiming to improve their mental health [s1].
What to watch
The measurement problem is the thing to follow. Prevalence of exposure is now reasonably well documented from two directions — athlete self-report and message-level monitoring — but nothing published connects that exposure to clinical outcomes, help-seeking, or performance. Until a study follows the same athletes over a season with validated mental-health instruments alongside abuse exposure, the honest statement is that a large share of athletes in two specific sports report betting-related harassment, and that its consequences have not been quantified.
