Muse and other brain-sensing headbands: real EEG, thin evidence they help

A meta-analysis of consumer neurofeedback found no benefit for cognition, mindfulness or physical health and only a small effect on distress — even though the headbands do record real brain activity.

Consumer EEG headbands such as Muse do record genuine brain activity — that part is validated. What is not validated is the leap the marketing makes from there: that reading your brainwaves back to you during meditation deepens the practice and improves your mind or body. A 2025 meta-analysis of consumer-grade neurofeedback found no benefit for cognition, mindfulness or physical health, and only a small effect on psychological distress [s1]. The sensor is real; the therapeutic claim is mostly not.

The device measures something real

Start with what holds up. A validation study put the Muse headband through the standard test of an EEG system — could it record the reliable, well-characterised event-related brain potentials that neuroscience labs use — and found that it could, capturing signals such as the reward positivity and the N200 and P300 responses [s2]. In other words, Muse is not a toy that outputs noise; it is a low-cost EEG sensor that picks up real electrophysiology [s2]. That legitimacy is what the wellness claims borrow against.

The wellness claims don't follow

The borrowing is where it breaks down. A preregistered meta-analysis pooled 16 randomised controlled training trials (763 participants) and 5 within-participant studies (167 participants) of consumer-grade neurofeedback paired with mindfulness meditation — the Muse device was used in 11 of the 16 randomised trials [s1]. Across outcomes, the results were close to flat.

There was a modest reduction in psychological distress compared with controls (11 comparisons; Hedges' g of −0.16; P=.03) — small, but statistically present [s1]. Everywhere else, nothing: no evidence of improvement in cognition (g=0.07; P=.48), in mindfulness itself (g=0.02; P=.83), or in physiological health (g=0.11; P=.57) [s1]. Most of these trials, moreover, compared the headband against a plain meditation app, so even the small distress effect is measured against active meditation, not against doing nothing.

Two features of the evidence base counsel further caution. The trials were typically small — the review notes samples of roughly 30 to 50 participants — which is the size at which chance findings and publication bias do the most damage, and the authors formally assessed the studies for exactly those risks [s1]. And a Hedges' g of −0.16 is, in plain terms, a difference most users would not notice: it is well below the threshold usually called a "small" effect, and it is the single positive result in a panel of four outcomes that were otherwise flat. When one modest effect sits among several nulls, the honest reading is scepticism, not a headline.

The mechanism didn't show up either

The theory behind neurofeedback is mechanistic: by seeing your alpha or theta activity, you learn to steer it toward a target state, and the benefits flow from that control. The meta-analysis tested that chain directly and found it broken — there was no evidence that the devices produced the brain-target modulation they are supposed to train [s1]. If the headband is not actually teaching users to change the brain signal, then whatever small benefit appears is unlikely to be coming from the neurofeedback mechanism at all. The authors raised the obvious alternative: that any effect may be a placebo of neurotechnology — the sense that a device is reading your brain can itself be soothing.

That places consumer neurofeedback alongside the broader disappointment of brain-training products, where practising a task reliably makes you better at that task but does not transfer to general cognitive ability. A plausible-sounding neuroscience story is not evidence of benefit, and here the controlled trials do not deliver one.

What this means for a reader

If a brain-sensing headband helps someone sit down and meditate, that is a real, if indirect, benefit — the ritual and the prompt may be doing useful work. But the specific promise, that neurofeedback deepens meditation or sharpens the mind beyond what meditation alone does, is not supported: the controlled evidence shows essentially no advantage over a meditation app for cognition, mindfulness or physical health, and only a small effect on distress [s1]. The headband is a real EEG device wrapped around a wellness claim the trials don't back. For most people the meditation is the active ingredient, and it is available without the hardware — a distinction worth keeping straight amid the wider hum of device alerts competing for our attention and worry.
