Greener streets, slightly happier people, and a bigger gain for the poorest

A UK survey of 26,322 urban adults finds a small but consistent life-satisfaction gain from neighbourhood greenery. A Stockholm study of 46,282 shows who ends up living without it.

"Green space is good for you" has been repeated often enough to have stopped meaning anything measurable. A UK analysis published this week is useful precisely because it puts a number on the claim, and the number is small.

The size of the effect

Researchers used the UK Household Longitudinal Study — a population-representative, ethnically diverse sample — restricted to urban residents, giving 26,322 people. Residential greenness was measured as neighbourhood Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, the satellite-derived greenness index; wellbeing was self-reported life satisfaction on a seven-point scale [s1].

At the population level, a 0.1-unit higher NDVI was associated with a 0.054-point higher life satisfaction score [s1]. On a seven-point scale, that is roughly eight-tenths of one percent of the range. It is a real association in a large representative sample, and it is not a large one.

The paper's actual contribution is what happens when that average is decomposed. The authors applied MAIHDA — Multilevel Analysis of Individual Heterogeneity and Discriminatory Accuracy — which estimates associations across groups jointly defined by sex, ethnicity and socioeconomic status, and tests whether differences between those groups are simply additive or specific to particular combinations [s1].

Across strata, the association ranged from 0.020 to 0.080 points of life satisfaction per 0.1-unit of NDVI [s1]. Positive associations appeared in every stratum, but the confidence intervals included the null for the high-socioeconomic-status White groups, which also had the smallest estimates [s1]. Between-stratum variation was fully accounted for by the additive contributions of sex, ethnicity and SES — no multiplicative intersectional effect was detected — with the strongest evidence of effect modification coming from socioeconomic status [s1].

Read plainly: the people for whom neighbourhood greenery appears to matter least are the people who already have the most of everything else. The people for whom it appears to matter most are those with fewer alternatives — no garden, no car to drive to one, no second home.

Who is living without it

That distribution is not accidental, which is what the second paper documents. A population-based study published 26 August drew on 46,282 adults aged 18 to 84 in Stockholm County who responded to the Swedish National Environmental Health Survey 2023, linking geocoded home addresses to modelled exposure to air pollution (PM2.5, PM10 and NO2), traffic noise (road, railway and aircraft) and greenness measured as NDVI within 300 metres [s2].

Apartment residents were more often exposed to air pollution and noise, and had less surrounding greenness, than people living in houses [s2]. Stratifying by socioeconomic status produced exposure-specific patterns rather than one consistent trend, which the authors report as such rather than smoothing over [s2].

The associations with self-reported experience were strong where you would expect: NO2 exposure with perceived poor outdoor air quality (OR 3.22, 95% CI 2.75 to 3.79), road traffic noise with high noise annoyance (OR 4.59, 4.02 to 5.26) [s2]. One association is less obvious and directly relevant to a warming summer — greenness was associated with lower perceived indoor heat stress during summer (OR 0.83, 0.79 to 0.88) [s2].

The limits

Both studies are cross-sectional in the analyses reported here, and both use self-report for the outcome. Neither can establish that adding trees to a street raises the life satisfaction of the people already on it. People who value greenery may move toward it; people with more money have more say in where they live, and money is associated with life satisfaction for reasons that have nothing to do with vegetation. The UK authors adjust for socioeconomic status and then stratify by it, which is a more careful treatment than simple adjustment, but stratification is not randomisation [s1].

The Stockholm outcomes are perceptions — perceived air quality, noise annoyance, perceived indoor heat — not clinical measurements [s2]. That is a legitimate outcome in its own right, and it is not the same thing as a health outcome.

What it means for a reader

Not a recommendation, because there is not a personal action here that the evidence supports. The implication of both papers is about where urban greening is placed, not whether an individual should seek out a park. The UK authors' own reading is equity-oriented: population-average estimates obscure socially patterned heterogeneity, and the average conceals that the smallest returns accrue to the groups with the most resources [s1].

What to watch is whether longitudinal designs — greening interventions with before-and-after measurement in the same people — reproduce the socioeconomic gradient. The cross-sectional signal is now well documented in large representative samples. The causal one is not.
