Melbourne hit 38°C and the Australian Open stopped. The scale that made the call
Play was suspended on outside courts on Saturday when the tournament's five-point Heat Stress Scale maxed out. A ball kid collapsed during a match the same day. The threshold is set on physiology, not air temperature.
Shortly after 2:30pm on Saturday, play stopped on the outside courts at Melbourne Park [s1]. The roofs closed over the arena courts so those matches could continue indoors [s1]. Outside-court play did not resume for five hours [s1].
The temperature at around 3pm was 38°C, two degrees below the forecast high [s1]. But the temperature is not what triggered the suspension. The tournament's Heat Stress Scale had reached 5, its maximum [s1].
That distinction — a physiological index rather than a thermometer reading — is the part worth understanding, because it is the model most outdoor sport is converging on.
What the scale measures
The Australian Open uses a five-point Heat Stress Scale developed in 2019 with the University of Sydney [s2]. The tournament's Environmental Management Unit measures four inputs — air temperature, radiant heat, humidity and wind speed — which feed an algorithm that produces the rating [s2].
The escalation is graded rather than binary [s2]:
- Levels 1 to 2: standard play
- Level 3: cooling strategies applied
- Level 4: extended breaks
- Level 5: play suspended on outside courts, roofs closed on the arenas
The reason four inputs beat one is that air temperature alone is a poor predictor of whether a body can shed heat. Humidity determines whether sweat evaporates, which is the dominant cooling route during exertion. Wind speed governs convective loss. Radiant heat — sun load on a hard court — can add substantially to what a person experiences relative to what a shaded thermometer reads. Two 38°C days can be very different physiological events.
The threshold sits where symptoms start
Thermal physiologist Matt Brearley described where the danger band falls in terms of core temperature rather than air temperature: athletes begin experiencing symptoms in the high 38s to low 39s — headache, fatigue, irritability and nausea — and above that, confusion and delirium may occur, which he characterised as extremely dangerous [s2].
That progression is the reason a scale needs a suspension level at all. The early symptoms are unpleasant but self-limiting. The neurological ones are not, and they arrive after the point at which an athlete can reliably judge their own condition. Confusion is a symptom that disables the judgement required to stop.
The people who are not being scored
A tennis player has a medical team, scheduled breaks and, on the show courts, a roof. The heat risk at a summer tournament is not distributed toward them.
On Saturday a ball kid collapsed during a match [s2]. Ball kids run in direct sun, in uniform, without the rest intervals players get between games and sets, and they are children.
Spectators are the larger exposed group and the least monitored. Brearley's recommendation for them was pre-cooling — icy poles or slushies — on the basis that ingested ice creates a heat sink internally [s2].
The scale governs whether play happens. It does not govern how long tens of thousands of people sit in the sun waiting for it.
What the tournament did before the scale maxed out
The suspension was not the only adjustment. On day seven, matches began an hour earlier than usual to reduce heat exposure [s2].
Schedule shifting is the cheapest and most effective heat intervention available to an outdoor event, because it moves activity away from peak radiant load rather than trying to cool a body that is already accumulating heat. It is also the hardest to implement in a sport built around broadcast windows.
Saturday had been forecast to reach 40°C in Melbourne [s2]; it topped out at 38°C [s1]. The harder day is still ahead — the forecast for Tuesday is 44°C in the outer suburbs [s2].
Why this is a climate story and not only a tennis one
A Grand Slam is an unusually well-instrumented outdoor workplace. It has four-variable environmental monitoring, a validated escalation protocol, an on-site medical unit and the authority to stop work.
Almost no outdoor workplace has any of that. Construction sites, agricultural fields and delivery routes in the same city on the same afternoon operate on the same four physiological inputs and none of the same protections. The people in them are exposed for longer, are less heat-acclimatised in many cases, and cannot stop when an index reaches 5.
The tournament is not the risk. It is the visible instrument for a risk that is being borne mostly out of view.
What to watch
The scale performed as designed on Saturday. The open question is the one every heat protocol faces as summers lengthen: whether an index built to handle occasional extreme days still works when those days stop being occasional, and whether a level-5 suspension remains a rare event or becomes an operating condition.
