Do root canals cause disease? The claim rests on century-old research the evidence rejects

The claim that root-canal-treated teeth seed chronic illness elsewhere in the body is not supported by evidence, and traces to a "focal infection" theory built on research from the early twentieth century that was later discredited [s2][s3]. Where the myth comes from

It acknowledged the genuinely established link between some oral infections — notably periodontal (gum) disease — and certain systemic conditions, but drew a sharp line: while gum disease has associations worth taking seriously, endodontically treated teeth specifically have not been implicated in systemic disease [s2]. Do root canals actually work
On the narrower question of whether the treatment succeeds at saving the tooth, the evidence is reassuring. A systematic review of longitudinal clinical studies pooled tooth-survival rates after non-surgical root canal treatment and found 86% (95% confidence interval 75% to 98%) surviving at 2–3 years, 93% (92% to 94%) at 4–5 years and 87% (82% to 92%) at 8–10 years [s1]. What is and isn't established

The limits are worth stating plainly.
