Do root canals cause disease? The claim rests on century-old research the evidence rejects

The claim that root-canal-treated teeth seed chronic illness elsewhere in the body is not supported by evidence, and traces to a "focal infection" theory built on research from the early twentieth century that was later discredited [s2][s3]. Modern reviews find that endodontically treated teeth have not been implicated in systemic disease, and root canal treatment itself is a durable procedure: most treated teeth survive for years [s1][s2].

Where the myth comes from

The idea was popularised through work associated with dentist Weston Price in the 1920s, whose experiments purported to show that bacteria from treated teeth caused disease throughout the body [s3]. That research was conducted without the controls and methods expected today, and its conclusions did not hold up as microbiology and study design advanced [s3]. The theory faded for decades, then returned through documentaries and online content that revived the century-old claims [s3].

A 2004 review of the focal infection theory traced both its history and its current standing [s2]. It acknowledged the genuinely established link between some oral infections — notably periodontal (gum) disease — and certain systemic conditions, but drew a sharp line: while gum disease has associations worth taking seriously, endodontically treated teeth specifically have not been implicated in systemic disease [s2]. That distinction matters, because the myth trades on conflating the real oral-systemic health literature with a specific, unsupported claim about root canals [s2].

Do root canals actually work

On the narrower question of whether the treatment succeeds at saving the tooth, the evidence is reassuring. A systematic review of longitudinal clinical studies pooled tooth-survival rates after non-surgical root canal treatment and found 86% (95% confidence interval 75% to 98%) surviving at 2–3 years, 93% (92% to 94%) at 4–5 years and 87% (82% to 92%) at 8–10 years [s1]. In other words, roughly 9 in 10 treated teeth remained in function years later — the procedure's purpose being precisely to keep a tooth that would otherwise be extracted [s1].

What is and isn't established

What the evidence supports: root canal treatment reliably saves teeth over the medium to long term, and treated teeth are not a demonstrated cause of systemic disease [s1][s2]. What is genuinely established and sometimes confused with the myth: untreated oral infection and gum disease are associated with some systemic conditions — which is an argument for treating infection, including with root canals, not for pulling teeth [s2].

The limits are worth stating plainly. Survival data come largely from clinical studies that may not reflect every practice setting, and "survival" means the tooth remained, not that it was free of any complication [s1]. Outcomes can be poorer in people with certain systemic conditions that impair healing [s1]. But none of that supports the viral claim; on the specific question the myth raises, the direction of the evidence is clear and consistent [s1][s2][s3].
